Description

The anniversary of the night battle at the Kondana fort (later renamed Sinhagad, meaning "Lion's Fort") near Pune. The Maratha forces, led by Subedar Tanaji Malusare, recaptured the fort from the Mughals. Though the Marathas were victorious, the loss of their brave commander led Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to utter the famous words, "Gad aala, pan Sinha gela" ("The fort is won, but the lion is lost").
